- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 BCE. In ancient Peru, people created centers of worship which existed mostly underground. In these 'temples' they put up images that where truly fearsome, such as stele of jaguar gods or masks like this example depicting Ai Apec, a principal god known for his impressive transformations, here presenting a mouth full of teeth and ferocious fangs as well as leering coffee bean shaped eyes in bas relief, this frightening visage crowned by a tumi-shaped headdress. Just imagine this mask's dramatic presence in the dark interior of a underground temple lit only by torches accompanied by the chanting of priests preparing a sacrifice! Size: 13" W x 8" H (33 cm x 20.3 cm); 11.5" H (29.2 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s

#101825One small crack from the top periphery of the headdress with some resurfacing over the break line. Expected surface wear and chips to peripheries and high-pointed areas as shown. Nice remains of red and black pigmentation. TL testing holes on verso of headdress and chin. Liberal mineral deposits and burnishing marks.Condition
