Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin 900 to 500 BCE. A delightful hand-built pottery effigy vessel of a monkey of black/grey hues. The monkey stands on his back legs with the wide tail supporting the body as he leans forward, a wide spout emerging from his back, holding nuts or fruits in his front paws. He has prominent genitalia and protruding spiraled ears, with incised lines indicating toes, nose, mouth, and wide eyes. This is perhaps a howler monkey, an animal that the Chavin culture depicted in many mythological narratives. Vessels, such as this piece, were often created for ritualistic purposes, such as holding offerings for the deceased and the howler monkey is associated with the underworld due to its unearthly calls. This fabulous vessel would be buried in the tomb to protect and serve the dead for eternity, and perhaps the monkey’s loud calls would frighten off any evil spirits. Size: 6.5" L x 3" W x 6.75" H (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm x 17.1 cm)
Monkeys are not native to the dry regions that the Chavin people lived, but they were often brought in or traded by cultures from the rainforest regions, to train as pets for the elite or to use in religious rituals. Five different species of monkeys have been identified in pre-Columbian art, with the most popular species has been identified as the howler monkey, so called because of their resounding calls, which have been associated with the underworld and perhaps water, because they often call out during rainstorms. Their semi-human characteristics led Chavin to believe they were ancestral relatives, and in some myths, the gods transformed humans into monkeys. Shamans grew their hair out long and disheveled to embody even more monkey-like characteristics.
