Changsoon Oh (Korean, Contemporary). Silence II. Oil on canvas. ca. 2006. Signed on verso. A magical painting in which Changsoon Oh has created an abstract response to nature using a beautiful palette of cobalt, periwinkle, aqua, and sky blue as well as black and white with moments of russet red, golden yellow, grassy green, and coral pink. Oh's gestural approach demonstrates abstract expressionist influences, and she also has an uncanny penchant for using light effects to capture a moment in time. In her words, "Painting is by its very nature an act of alchemy, I endeavor to capture the ethereal element of light in the material medium of pigment." What inspired this piece - whether sea, sky, or another element of nature - one may never know, as literal representation is not her motivation. For more on this, please read Oh's artist statement below. Size: 29.875" L x 29.875" W (75.9 cm x 75.9 cm); 30.875" L x 30.875" W (78.4 cm x 78.4 cm) framed
Changsoon Oh's Artist Statement: "My paintings are narratives based on landscape—not literal representations of the natural word, but rather, abstract accounts of my responses to those places, in their stillness and movement, color and sound. The act of painting allows me to re-engage with the memory of a particular place while also gaining a greater understanding of the universality of nature. Every sea, every meadow, recalls another one seen, walked, smelled and heard—while meriting its own unique response as well. It is my hope that my paintings are viewed as a whole—that they offer interpretations beyond a single vista or fixed moment in time. What I hope emerges is an appreciation for nature itself, in its paradoxically constant and ever-changing state." (artist's website)
