Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. An impressive whistling vessel enveloped in a creamy beige slip. Mold-made, the fascinating instrument features a pair of circular chambers connected at their midsections by a cylindrical tunnel and sitting upon conical feet. A charming avian creature roosts atop one of the vessel's chambers, while a slender, tubular spout rises from the other chamber. The lovely bird presents a thick body seated upon slender legs with delineated toes, tucked wings, a flared tail, and a petite head exhibiting large, target-motif eyes and a pointed beak. The spout and figure are connected by an arched ribbon of clay, forming a nice handle. Size: 11.6" L x 11" H (29.5 cm x 27.9 cm)
