Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery female figure known as a cuchimilco or "stargazer" who stands on thick, tubular legs and gently flared feet. The figure presents nude with dark brown bands accentuating her knees, chest, arms, and cheeks as she holds both arms out at her sides. Her conical head features protruding ovoid eyes, a bulbous nose with impressed nostrils, perky ears, and a segmented headband stretching across the front of the brow, all beneath a beehive-style cap or coiffure. Professional repair and restoration to hip and upper thigh of proper left leg as well as right ear and areas of right side of head, with nearly invisible resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines; more repairs and restoration may be present but is very difficult to discern. Light abrasions and encrustations to legs, arms, body, and head, with fading to original pigment, and light earthen deposits. Nice preservation to overall form.
