Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A massive figural vessel with painted and applied details on a classically egg-shaped body with a cylindrical head. Toes and fingers are applied to the frontside. The head is forward facing with thin, closed lips, a protruding nose, wide, bulging eyes, and pointed ears. A large, flared headdress caps his head, tying just below his chin and dually serving as the spout of the vessel. Black slip details adorn the figure, adding detail to the arms, tattoos to his face, elaborate patterns to his tunic, and vertical plumage to his headdress. The wide-eyed expression and headdress suggest that this is a shaman during a religious trance. Please note that Lucite stand is for photography purposes only. Size: 8.5" in diameter x 13" H (21.6 cm x 33 cm)
