Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fascinating textile displaying a pair of abstract avian figures flanked above and below by a border of horizontal bands, all adorned in hues of maroon, marigold, olive, pink, caramel, beige, black, and white. Each of the eccentric zoomorphs displays a circular body with a curved, open beak and an almond-shaped eye, all flanked by a pair of extended, zigzag wings that flare at the ends. A series of curling wave-like decorations line both sides of the wings, perhaps representing feathers, as a pair of legs with large feet and sharp talons are shown below the lower wing of each ancient animal. Size (of textile): 9" L x 5.25" W (22.9 cm x 13.3 cm); Size (with frame): 17.25" W x 14.375" H (43.8 cm x 36.5 cm)

Condition
Has not been examined outside of frame. Fragment of larger piece. Fraying to peripheries with loosening of strands in lower right corner. Some small perforations to interior, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with impressive pigments.
