Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A rare and intriguing pottery vessel of a bulbous form depicting an adorable avian creature known as the Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti). Highly burnished and adorned with black, cream, and orange-red hues, this coastal bird displays a perky, conical head with a slender beak and eyes encircled in white pigment. A pair of tab-shaped wings and curvilinear legs protrude from the front of the white body, and the black back feathers are shown atop an orange-red ground. Behind the trefoil pouring spout is a curved handle with white spots as well as black and white limbs and tail that belong to an abstract zoomorphic creature. The Humboldt penguin is a native species to coastal Peru, so the ancient Chancay would have been familiar with these delightful birds! Size: 7" W x 8.8" H (17.8 cm x 22.4 cm)
