Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a tall, ovoid form with a rounded base, an enlarged, lozenge-shaped body, and a tall spout rim with an interesting visage. The figural elements of this vessel include petite feet protruding from the lower body, raised hands grasping a conical olla, and dark brown and cream accents across a burnt sienna ground. Across the front of the spout are highly stylized facial features including applied ovoid eyes, a slender nose, a tab-shaped chin beneath pursed lips, discoid ear spools with cruciform motifs, and 5 vertical tabs poking out from the brow. Condition
Small chips to forehead tabs, face, and body, with fading and light encrustations to scattered areas of painted decorations, otherwise intact and very good. Indentation along verso formed during original creation process. Nice preservation to figural form and good pigment craquelure in a few areas.
