Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. An intriguing figural vessel of a sizable form with red, black, and cream pigment, all displayed on an egg-shaped body with a rounded base and a cylindrical head. A pair of petite hands crosses in front of the chest to hold the base of a small olla, and the curvilinear legs are raised slightly away from the lower body. The forward-facing visage presents raised ovoid eyes, a triangular nose above full lips and a protruding jaw, black painted eyelids, and enormous discoid ear ornaments, all beneath a crown laden with incised 'shell' ornaments. The slightly squinting eyes, contorted face, and parted lips suggest that this is a shaman during a ceremonial trance. Size: 8.4" W x 15.75" H (21.3 cm x 40 cm)
