Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A delightful pottery figure known as a cuchimilco or stargazer, shown standing atop long legs with hands raised to each side. Boasting hues of black, beige, and russet, the fascinating female displays a huge head with ovoid eyes, an up-turned nose, and full, gently parted lips, all adorned in face paint and flanked by a pair of round ears. Her thick body is dressed in a short tunic over her petite breasts, while her lower half remains bare, exposing her delineated genitalia and her head is capped by a hemispherical headdress with 3 perforations and a zigzag-motif headband.
