Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. An attractive pottery canteen of a slightly flattened round form with a wide-mouthed spout branching off a narrow neck, all sitting upon a round yet stable base and adorned in hues of black and cream on a sienna ground. The ancient vessel is decorated with elaborate relief imagery on each flattened side. One side depicts a head, perhaps a trophy head, displaying heavy-lidded, almond-shaped eyes, a flat nose, and a downturned mouth. Six sets of parallel striations extend outwards in different directions from the solemn visage. Wolf heads with open mouths and sharp teeth cap 4 sets of these striations on the top and bottom of the trophy head, while sun-like motifs cap 2 to either side. Ears of corn and spikes of wheat seemingly sprout from the top and a pair of birds with spread wings, flared tails, and elongated beaks fly inwards at the bottom. Alternatively, the other side of the vessel presents the relief of a standing figure, possibly a deity, enveloped in lush phytomorphic designs, which feature ears of corn, spikes of wheat, and other plants. The intriguing figure bends both arms at the elbows, holding up his hands, as 7 target motifs decorate his chest, a heavy pectoral hangs from his neck, and a 2-headed animal lays across his lap. Flanked by a pair of sun-motifs, his head exhibits wide eyes, a bulbous nose, and a slightly open mouth, all topped by a tall coiffure of skyward-rising striations. A group of 3 heads in profile can be seen to his left. Size: 8.25" W x 10.25" H (21 cm x 26 cm)
