Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1425 CE. An anthropomorphic wooden figure with painted details and a hand-woven textile headdress and cape with cords wrapped around his head and torso. The wooden body is comprised of a squat rectangular body and torso that supports the broad head panel - the chin slightly juts over the short neck. The head is carved with facial details such as a protruding nose and deep-set eye sockets, and the eyes and cheeks are painted with red and black pigments to create pupils and tattoos or scarification marks. The cloth wrappings are made from loosely woven cotton and naturally dyed brown and umber hues - the headdress and torso wrapping are one lengthy piece, held in place by knotted cords around the back of the head and around the neck. Due to the dry and arid climate and burial practices, these remarkable pieces made of wood and textile have been well preserved and offer a rare glimpse into the Chancay culture. Size: 3.7" W x 11.75" H (9.4 cm x 29.8 cm); 12.125" H (30.8 cm) on included custom stand.
