Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous terracotta vessel in the form of a shaman carrying a deer over his shoulder. Adorned in black and beige pigments, the fascinating figure rests on a round yet stable base, presenting a bulbous body molded with his petite feet, bent legs, and arms. The deer is slung across the shoulders of the man, as the head of the doe or fawn perks up, displaying a long snout, prominent, tab-shaped ears, and wide, almond-shaped eyes held open as though alive. The gently flared rim of the vessel forms a headdress with a projecting discoid, while the corseted neck features the figure's face with target-motif eyes, a pinched nose, and puckered lips representing his status as a "Life Giver," which gave him the capacity to control some manifestations of life-forces, thereby allowing him the ability to 'blow the breath of life' into his subjects - perhaps this deer! Size: 7" W x 12.6" H (17.8 cm x 32 cm)
A lovely, ribbon-form handle connects the verso of the figure's head with the shoulder of the vessel. Note the skillfully painted geometric designs of zigzag, checkered, and striated motifs embellishing the figure's tunic and headdress!
