Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hand-built, infant sized cuchimilco ("star gazer") figure of a hollow-molded and stylized form with painted details. This figure stands on two delineated legs with arms outstretched and the head pointed skyward. The figure is nude with feminine genitalia, an incised line that emphasizes the pubic bone area, a slightly indented naval cavity, and small breasts. The face is comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a protruding pinched nose with nostril openings that lead into the head, and ears with perforations as well; these openings acted as vents during the firing process but may have held additional ornamentation. Dark brown (nearly black) pigments accentuate her torso, indicate tattoos on the face, and detail the top of the elongated head -which may be a cap-like headdress or coiffure - with zigzagging lines. Traces of a vibrant red pigment are speckled across her face. Scholars posit that these "star gazers" were placed in tombs as companions or guardians of the deceased. Size: 9.75" W x 15.75" H (24.8 cm x 40 cm)
