Marc Chagall (Russian-French, 1887-1985). "Derriere Le Miroir" cover - Lithograph printed in colors on wove paper, no. 198, May 1972, from Maught publication. During the postwar era, the owners of Maeght Gallery in Paris - Aime and Marguerite Maeght - ventured to create a means for distributing and engaging discourse on the graphic artwork of artists who were primarily from the School of Paris. Hence, they created the periodical "Derriere le Miroir" - meaning "Behind the Mirror" which served as an exhibition catalogue for Maeght exhibitions as well as an avenue for distributing prints of graphic works. The cover here features the work of Marc Chagall, a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin who was truly a poet of the art world. While many of his contemporaries were driven to pursue pure abstraction or non-objectivity, Chagall was faithful to figurative art, albeit with a Surrealist, Expressionist, Cubist, or Suprematist twist. Size of Chagall: 11" W x 14.875" H (27.9 cm x 37.8 cm)
Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893-1983). "Le Belier Fleuri" lithograph printed in colors on wove paper, 1971.Paired with the Chagall cover is a large lithograph in colors by Joan Miro entitled "Le Belier Fleuri" (The Flowery Ram) depicting a striking interpretation of a ram with flowers, that was also created for "Derriere le Miroir" in 1971, published that same year by the respected Maeght atelier. On the verso is text written by Pierre Alechinsky. Catalogue reference is Mourlot 739. Miro created some of his most fascinating compositions for "Derriere Le Miroir". Size of Miro: 21.8" W x 14.875" H (55.4 cm x 37.8 cm)
