Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Canaanite, Bronze Age, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. This is a fine polychrome vessel with a pedestal foot, a broad carinated body, and an upper shoulder that tapers slightly inward to a flared rim. The rim is shaped to receive a lid to cover the contents of the jar, and an arched strap handle is attached from the neck to the body midsection. The exterior surface is decorated with painted vertical registers containing linear and wavy lines in hues of russet red and dark umber. This is a fine example of ancient utilitarian pottery that was wheel thrown on a lathe, marking a remarkable technological shift in pottery! Size: 7" Diameter x 9" H (17.8 cm x 22.9 cm)
