South Italy, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A finely painted Campanian red-figure bell krater, likely attributed to the Libation Painter, a well-known artist of the South Italian red-figure tradition. Bell kraters were essential vessels used for mixing wine and water at symposia, playing a central role in social and ritual gatherings. Obverse: A dynamic battle composition featuring two warriors engaged in combat, depicted with powerful stances and expressive gestures. The scene may represent a mythological duel or a heroic confrontation, reflecting the Greek warrior ethos commonly celebrated in South Italian vase painting. Reverse: A more subdued yet elegant contrast, with two draped youths engaged in conversation, a motif frequently used to provide balance to the action-packed obverse. Size: 12.25" W x 12" H (31.1 cm x 30.5 cm)
The Libation Painter is recognized for his carefully proportioned figures, detailed drapery, and dramatic yet refined compositions. His work embodies the Campanian red-figure style, which blended Attic influences with regional aesthetics, often emphasizing vibrant storytelling and expressive movement.
