Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Valle Del Cauca, Calima, Yotoco phase, ca. 300 to 1300 CE. This whimsical redware alcarraza vessel is mold-formed into an interesting bulbous form with a double spout. The vessel rests on a stable base formed by 5 lobes and mammary-shaped protrusions, and above is a row of more petite nodules of the same shape. A domed top with a flared rim supports the double spouts, both set an angle to the sides with an arching handle. While the body is comprised of 10 mammary glands, the top resembles a phallic head! The surface is slipped in a dark maroon and orange hue and highly burnished. An interesting vessel with composite symbolism of fertility, virility, and abundance. Size: 7" Diameter x 7" H (17.8 cm x 17.8 cm)
