Roman, Late Imperial to Early Byzantine Period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A magnificent marble column capital of the Corinthian order boasting a central acanthus leaf on each of its 4 sides. Presenting an annular base and a square top, the capital is meticulously carved with 6 vines enveloping each of the leaves, all curving upwards as the 2 outermost vines spiral into volutes at each upper corner. A stunning architectural element from ancient Byzantium and an elegant addition to any home decoration or collection! Size: 15.9" L x 16" W x 12" H (40.4 cm x 40.6 cm x 30.5 cm); 20.1" H (51.1 cm) on included custom stand.
The Corinthian order is the most ornate of the orders (as opposed to the earlier Doric and Ionic) boasting slender fluted columns topped by elaborate capitals with acanthus leaves and scrolled volutes like this example. The famous Roman architect Vitruvius observed that the lavish Corinthian design "was produced out of the two other orders." Vitruvius described the Corinthian column as "an imitation of the slenderness of a maiden; for the outlines and limbs of maidens, being slenderer on account of their tender years, admit of prettier effects in the way of adornment."
