Ancient Near East, Byzantine, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A beautiful cup created from high-quality silver and adorned with a gilt cross at the center. Sitting upon a tiered, annular foot, the hemispherical bowl features one handle that elegantly extends from the rim, curving beneath and ending with a downward-pointing, conical terminus, while the top displays a flared cover flanked by gilt volutes at the rim. The equal-armed cross is both impressed and gilt with decorative nodules at the corner of each arm. The central cross suggests that this vessel would have been used during a Christian religious ceremony, perhaps for holding the water during a Baptism or the wine for the Eucharist. Size: 6.5" L x 4.7" W x 2.4" H (16.5 cm x 11.9 cm x 6.1 cm); silver quality: 97.7%; weight: 178.7 grams
Luxury objects like this gilt silver cup attest to the considerable prosperity of this region, due in large part to its agricultural bounty. From the fourth through seventh centuries, this great wealth enabled even small, rural communities to finance the construction of many churches and acquire sumptuous liturgical equipment.
A similar silver chalice without gilding and of a slightly more petite scale (4.5 inches long) hammered $26,290 (now $46, 166.78 with inflation) at Christie's New York on December 12, 2002 (lot 651, Live Auction 1164 "Ancient Jewelry").
