Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to early 13th century CE. This bronze cross pendant features a relief image of Christ crucified surrounded by four saints in medallions, possibly the four evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). The separately cast, hinged loop at the top of the cross allows for suspension as a pendant, and a hinge at the bottom indicates that this beautiful cross would have served as part of a reliquary (a container for holy relics) for its Byzantine owner. Size: 2.5" L x 1.5" W x .25" H (6.4 cm x 3.8 cm x 0.6 cm) Cord Length: Size: 22" L (55.9 cm)
Relics - physical remains of saints or objects associated with Christ, such as pieces of the True Cross, the shroud His body was wrapped in, or, mythically, the Holy Grail – held tremendous power in medieval Christianity. Reliquaries were usually kept in cathedrals or churches, but some wealthy individuals were able to possess them. The less wealthy could purchase replicas of reliquaries, small reliquaries containing less precious items like soil from a holy site, or metal items produced as a form of souvenir from shrines. Later, many of these objects were destroyed in times of religious conflict or strife; coveted reliquaries traditionally have been passed down through generations of families.

Condition
Bronze reliquary pendant dates to the Byzantine period, but is strung on a modern cord to be wearable. Hinge has a minute loss, possibly a casting flaw, but still functions. Back plate is missing. Expected surface wear has obscured some of details, though imagery remains strong overall.
