Southeast Asia, Burma (present day Myanmar), Ava Period, ca. 14th to 16th century CE. A wonderful copper sculpture of Buddha sitting atop an openwork, 5-tiered stand of square form filled with attendants, followers, and animals. The tranquil deity sits in lotus position in the Bhumisparsha mudra - with his right-hand palm down on his leg and his left supine in his lap - which represents the moment of his awakening, as Buddha defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. With robes draped from his left shoulder, Buddha presents a tranquil visage with minimalist features flanked by a pair of long-lobed ears - a symbol of his renunciation of material wealth - and capped by a pointed ushnisha, as well as an openwork, petaloid halo. Size: 5.3" W x 10.5" H (13.5 cm x 26.7 cm)
The tiers below the serene divinity are all filled with additional figures of humans, lions, a snake, and an elephant. The human figures partake in various activities of faith, such as prayer, meditation, and giving offerings, while lovely stupas adorn the corners of the second and third tiers. A lustrous gold pigment formed from a mixture of copper and silver embellishes the top 3 tiers of the intricate sculpture.

Condition
One figure on second highest tier has been reattached with break lines visible. Some light bending to a few figures and areas, but form is still clear. Expected abrasions, nicks, and softening of detail, as shown. Otherwise, excellent with nice remains of gold pigment. Lovely earthen deposits and patina.
