After Diego Giacometti (Swiss, 1902-1985). "Le Chat Maitre-d'Hotel" cast patinated bronze, 1967-1981. Signed "Diego G" lower right on base. A wonderfully whimsical standing bronze cat holding a serving tray titled "Chat Maitre-d'Hotel" by Diego Giacometti who adored animal forms. Despite being somewhat overshadowed by his older brother, Alberto Giacometti, Diego had his own unique artistic expression and was a talented sculptor in his own right. His modernist vision as well as his passion for nature manifested in his sculpture as well as his animal sculptures as well as his furniture designs which were oftentimes inspired by the Alpine valleys recalled from his childhood. A very special bronze butler feline by Diego Giacometti who cherished his feline friends so much that cats famously had the run of the Giacometti brother's shared studio at 46 rue Hippolyte Maindron in Paris! Size: 11.875" H x 9" L x 3.25" W (30.2 cm x 22.9 cm x 8.3 cm)
About the artist: Diego Giacometti was a Swiss sculptor who came from an artistic family from the valley Bergell in the Italian-speaking part of the Switzerland. His father was the painter Giovanni Giacometti (1868-1933), and his older brother was the famous surrealist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). Diego and Alberto were very close, and Diego assisted his brother by making plaster casts and frameworks for Alberto's sculptures as well as patinating the bronzes. In addition, Diego regularly posed for Alberto until his brother's death in 1966. Diego actually began creating his own sculptures during World War II; however, after his brother's death, Diego was able to put all his energy into his own art. Fascinated by animals, Diego featured zoomorphic creatures in his sculptures such as "Table Arbre a la Souris" (Tree Table with Mouse), "Ostrich" ( a bronze ostrich and ostrich egg at the Ilana Goor Museum), and of course "Chat Maitre d'Hotel".
