South America, Brazil, Santana Formation, Early Cretaceous epoch, Late Jurassic to Aptian stage, ca. 150 to 109 million years ago. A finely preserved fish fossil depicting Vinctifer comptoni. The fish fossil is set within a tan-hued stone matrix and is split down the center to reveal the scaly body within. The fish presents with a narrow, egg-shaped head with bulging eyes and a petite mouth, a muscular body lined with several rows of vertical scales, and a tapered tail with a somewhat bushy tip. Condition
One half repaired from two large pieces and the other half repaired from three large pieces, both with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Nicks to exterior matrix. Nice preservation to interior fish details. Old label on center of one half.
