Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Patterned Teepee" oil on masonite, 2010. Signed at lower right. A striking painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton, "Patterned Teepee" pays homage to the annual gatherings of Plains peoples and trapper traders when stories were shared and goods were traded. The composition features a teepee that is embellished with a stunning blue-on-white dotted pattern, its luminous hues reflecting those of the skies above. All is delineated in Halsey-Dutton's lyrical manner, mounted in a museum-quality frame comprised of a burlwood finish and decorative inlays. According to the artist, "This painting of a patterned canvas teepee is paying homage to the rendezvous of yesteryear. Rendezvous means coming together and the tradition of trapper traders and Native American tribes to meet annually was a reality for a while in America. Goods and stories were traded. This ideal is re-enacted by many people today through a host of rendezvous across our country. It is a celebration of the past, honoring the simple joys of living off the land. The whimsical pattern on this teepee reflects the blue sky which surrounds it. The converging lines of the lodge poles and the texture of the component parts was the initial inspiration for the painting." Size (painting): 36" L x 24" W (91.4 cm x 61 cm) Size (frame): 41.5" L x 29.5" W (105.4 cm x 74.9 cm)
