Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Leaving One's Mark" watercolor and gouache on heavy-weight archival watercolor paper, 2010. Signed and dated at bottom right. Signature, date, and title handwritten on verso. A sophisticated painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton that speaks to the rich creative history of the indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. The composition features a single moccasin spotlit in the foreground against a background embellished by pictographs of animals and textural patterns that suggest shoe prints implying those "leaving one's mark". All is delineated in rich earth tones with a few contrasting blue and red highlights on the vamp of the moccasin. Halsey-Dutton's manner of paint application suggests age and weathering that has accrued over the course of history. What's more, the painting is uniquely floated upon a backdrop that Halsey-Dutton painted to resemble buffalo hide and housed within a deep acrylic shadowbox that underscores the cultural importance of the theme and suggests that the artwork itself is a treasured artifact. Size (painting): 18" L x 11" W (45.7 cm x 27.9 cm) Size (shadowbox): 22.4" L x 15.375" W x 2.7" D (56.9 cm x 39.1 cm x 6.9 cm)
