Bob T. Dunfield (American, active 20th to 21st century), painted gourd figure, ca. 1980s. A striking piece by award-winning gourd artist Bob Dunfield of Frisco, Texas. Inspired by a traditional Native American ceremonial figure, this female carries a petite painted gourd on her head, wears a beautiful garment of ruby red hues that is adorned with concentric circles and cloud-like motifs of cocoa, almond, caramel, and chocolate brown hues as well as an incised and painted trim of stylized triangular and diamond motifs delineated in cream and brown, with red dots decorating the cream motifs that surround her visage. She looks out with dramatic features - abstract rectilinear black eyes and a triangular red mouth outlined in black - adorned by a beautiful head covering of ruby red and aqua hues with angular black bands embellished with silver dots. Size: 17.25" H (43.8 cm)
Ever since he was a youth, Bob Dunfield has been growing gourds on his farm in Frisco. One year, decades ago, his yield surpassed 600 gourds, and he decided to turn them into art. In addition to dolls inspired by traditional Kachina dolls and various Native American ceremonial figures like this example, Dunfield has created other forms including animals, masks, and bird houses.

#162748There is a gourd-shaped label on the underside stating "Award Winning Gourd Art by: Bob T. Dunfield' with his address in Frisco, Texas. Just a few minor nicks to the paint, otherwise intact and excellent. The baby gourd atop the figure's head is still attached securely and also very nicely decorated.Condition
