William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). "Cabin in the Hills" oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. Signed on lower right. A picturesque landscape painting by the legendary Bill Freeman. Freeman presents us with an optimal view of an expansive blue-ridge mountain range from the grasses and wildflowers below. Voluminous clouds float over the majestic peaks, while rows of conifers and bright yellow leafed deciduous trees lead the viewer to a charming log cabin nestled amidst the rolling hills. Freeman's painting possesses an almost ethereal quality thanks to his dreamy palette of periwinkle, sky blue, sage, forest green, buttercup yellow, sienna, white, grey, and tawny orange as well as a style that demonstrates influences of Impressionism and Expressionism achieved via a sophisticated use of brush and palette knife. A breathtaking landscape set in a custom frame embellished with golden mouldings that beautifully complement the composition. Size: 19.625" L x 23.5" W (49.8 cm x 59.7 cm) Size of frame: 28.375" L x 32.3" W (72.1 cm x 82 cm)
Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of 30 that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona as well as Jackson Hole and Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming.
