William E. Freeman - also known as Bill Freeman (American, 1927-2012), "Evening by the Creek", oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. Signed on lower right. A beautiful landscape painting depicting a buck and a doe by a rocky creek streaming through the forest, the golden leaf canopy indicating that the scene takes place in autumn, the dramatic rays of sunlight suggest that it is either dawn or dusk. Freeman's painting possesses an almost ethereal quality thanks to his dreamy palette of butter yellow, warm orange, sage green, golden ochre, sienna brown, dove grey, and dusky rose and a style that demonstrates influences of Impressionism and Expressionism achieved via a sophisticated use of palette knife and brush. Freeman presents us with this tranquil moment in the wilderness. Set in custom framing with a brass plaque engraved with artist and title. Size: 30" W x 24" H (76.2 cm x 61 cm); 38.625" W x 32.25" H (98.1 cm x 81.9 cm) with frame
Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of 30 that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
