Buffet was born in Paris, France, and studied art there at the Lycee Carnot and the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. Buffet had his first painting (a self portrait) exhibited at the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans at the Galerie Beaux-Arts in 1946. Dr. Maurice Girandin - a patron of Rouault and Utrillo - championed Buffet's work following a rejection by the Prix de la Jeune Peinture jury. This news made quite a splash bestowing Buffet with immense fame, and he became a favorite post-war artist of France. In 1948, Buffet won the Grand Prix de la Critique, quite a feat for an artist who was so young.
In 1955, Buffet won the magazine Connaissance des arts' first prize; this magazine named the top 10 post-war artists. When he was only 30 years old, in 1958, Buffet had his first retrospective of his work at the Galerie Charpentier. In 1973, Kiichiro Okano founded the Bernard Buffet Museum in Surugadaira, Japan. Five years later, the French postal administration asked Buffet to design a stamp depicting the Institut et le Pont des Arts, and to commemmorate this occasion, the Post Museum arranged a retrospective of his oeuvre. In addition to creating some 8,000 paintings, Buffet was an engraver, a lithographer, a book illustrator, and a stage designer. Sadly on October 4, 1999, Buffet committed suicide at his home in Tourtour of southern France. He had been suffering the effects of Parkinson's disease and by this time was unable to create art any longer.
