Benny Carter (American, b. 1943). "Little Big New York" oil on board. Signed "BENNY CARTER" upper left painting & left frame molding. "LITTLE BIG NEW YORK" bottom center frame molding. "NOVEMBER 29 / 19 / 43 / BTC" right frame molding. An imaginative cityscape capturing the spirit of New York City by folk/outsider artist Benny Carter. This delightful composition is rendered with Carter's painstakingly detailed approach and is filled with a myriad of iconic elements - the Statue of Liberty brandishing a wide smile while holding her torch and a key to the city; densely packed brick buildings and rising skyscrapers; signs for institutions such as House of Blues, Tiffany's, A&P Stores, N.Y. Life, and Wall Street as well as religious references such as Jesus and John 3:16 reflecting the artist's Baptist upbringing; crowds walking the streets before signed entryways listing various sources of pleasure such as art, beer and wine; iconic yellow taxicabs lining the street below as well as the bridges beyond; and a golden sky embellished with hot air balloons, flocks of birds, and American flags. About the Artist: Binford Taylor Carter, Jr better known as Benny Carter was born in High Point, North Carolina in 1943 but his paintings reference his countless visits to New York City as well as biblical stories. A contemporary artist beloved for his folk art and outsider art, Benny Carter is a descendant of Thomas Carter who was a Puritan minister of the Massachusetts Bay Colony as well as a others who moved south and owned the Carter Plantation in North Carolina. Carter is a self-trained artist who in addition to paintings creates birdhouses, sculptures, and clocks. Carter's art has been exhibited at the American Visionary Art Museum, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Palmer Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. His work has also been discussed in publications including "Self-Taught, Outsider, and Folk Art" (2000) by Betty-Carol Sellen and Cynthia J. Johanson, "American Folk Art: A Regional Reference" (2012) by Kristin G. Congdon and Kara Kelley Hallmark, and "Light of the Spirit: Portraits of Southern Outsider Artists" (1998) by Karekin Goekjian and Robert Peacock.
