Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A superb example of a standing anthropomorphic figure with a stylized presentation, hand-carved from a stone type known as tecali. Tecali is traditionally referred to as "Mexican onyx," however it is not in the agate family; it more closely resembles a calcite stone like alabaster. The intriguing figure stands with a rigid posture atop delineated feet, with legs shrouded by an ankle-length skirt adorned with concentric rectangles, and with both arms covered with a broad, incised, T-shaped tunic. The rounded triangular head features an expressive countenance composed with drilled ovoid eyes, a slender nose with flared nostrils, parted lips with a delineated philtrum, and tab-shaped ears flanking the slightly furrowed brow, all beneath a tall, plateaued brow. The translucent green, yellow, and orange hues of the stone illuminate when a light is placed behind the figure. Size: 3.5" W x 9" H (8.9 cm x 22.9 cm); 9.4" H (23.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Teotihuacan was at one time the largest city in the Pre-Columbian world, famous for its pyramids (Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon) as well as the Great Compound with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (aka Temple of the Plumed Serpent) punctuating the Avenue of the Dead. Stone figures like this example are perhaps the best-known works of Teotihuacan art. Examples like this figure from Teotihuacan often have idealized features (rather than individual depictions) and calm expressions, with simple lines used economically in order to create powerful effigies without an overuse of detail.
