- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, Panama or Costa Rica, Veraguas (Chiriqui), ca. 900 to 1550 CE. This is a stunning tumbaga ornament in the form of a stylized frog with a 50% (equivalent to 12K) gold content, cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process. This piece is highly abstract, but elegant; the T-shaped body hammered flat from a thick sheet, the simplified hind legs are merely rectangles, protruding at right angles from the vertical body, but suggest the muscular hopping capability. The head is decorated with applied double spirals and granulated spherical eyes. While not visible from the front, a suspension loop is located on the verso of the head, making this charming frog a wearable pendant, ready to suspend from your favorite gold chain or simply admire as a work of art! Size: 1.25" L x 1.25" W (3.2 cm x 3.2 cm); quality of tumbaga: gold: 50% (equivalent to 12K); copper: 46%; silver: 2%; weight: 4.7 grams
Imagine the brilliantly colored tree frogs inhabiting the lush rain forests of Costa Rica and Panama; these amphibians are the inspiration for this goldwork of the region. This frog pendant is not only impressive for its precious goldwork and artistry, but also deeply symbolic as frogs signified seasonal rainfalls as well as fertility. Ancient societies of Central America used gold ornaments to symbolize power and honor in both life and death. Gold was so highly regarded that leaders were buried surrounded by goldworks, including frogs like this example.
