Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, ca. 500 to 1200 CE. A fine gold amulet comprised of 57% gold (equivalent to 12K+ gold) in the form of an abstract frog with wide flippered feet, bent knees, a slender body, and a bulbous head with spherical eyes from which large spirals project. An integral suspension loop on the verso enables the amulet to hang from a necklace replete with dozens of thin jade disc beads, faceted sapphires, and rough, glinting diamonds. A pair of gold tube beads separates the jade-adorned midsection from the outer strands, and a gold-filled loop and lobster clasp combo cap the terminals. In the Pre-Columbian world, gold possessions represented not only the owner's elite social status but also had sacred connotations as the yellow hues were associated with the sun and the celestial realm. Strung in modern times, this is a stunning necklace of exquisite beauty! Size (necklace): 18.75" L (47.6 cm); size (frog pendant): 0.7" W x 0.875" H (1.8 cm x 2.2 cm); quality of gold: 57% (equivalent to 12K+ gold).

Condition
Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Gold frog amulet, tube beads, and jade discs are ancient, and sapphires, diamonds, and gold-filled hardware are modern. Slight bending to overall form of tubes and frog, with minor nicks to some jade, sapphire, and diamond beads, otherwise intact and excellent. Light patina throughout gold components.
