South America, probably Bolivia, Spanish Colonial period, ca. early to mid 19th century CE. A beautiful matched pair of plaque adornments, each formed from a sheet of high grade (92-95%) silver, presenting ample figurative and religious details in repousse. Each plaque features a relief image of a young Jesus Christ wearing elaborate garments and holding a pair of spiral-tipped tendrils while standing amongst a field of clouds and softly hammered bars indicative of radiant light. Modern wooden backings are secured to the backs of each plaque with slender metal nails. Plaques like these examples would have been attached as decorative elements on chests or other personal items. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 7.5" W x 8.125" H (19 cm x 20.6 cm); quality of silver: between 92% and 95%; total weight (w/ wood backings): 627.1 grams.
Silver decorative items like these attests to the mineral wealth of the Spanish New World colonies - indeed, from ca. 1575 to 1635 CE, the Spanish city of Potosi (now Bolivia), produced roughly half of the world's silver! Even after Potosi reached its peak with a dramatic currency fixing scandal in the 1640s, elite Spanish colonists continued to use silver for devotional purposes and to display and flaunt their wealth. Woman wore silver heeled shoes, church statues had silver crowns and halos, and all types of furniture gained silver panels like this to decorate them. These give us a wonderful idea of how an upper-class Spanish colonial home looked.
