Ancient Egypt, Balabish, New Kingdom, 19th dynasty, 1292 to 1189 BCE. This is one of the reasons I love this business. This incredible vessel came into us with little information other than it was Egyptian of unknown era and provenance. Amazingly, all of the information about this piece could be found on a label inside the vessel and an inventory number inscribed on its side. Acorn-shaped jar and painted in a decoration style that would make one immediately decide it is Neolithic from the Naqada region and period. But the label inside the jar tells a different story and a tiny bit of research confirmed it. This vessel was actually manufactured 2000 years after the Naqada period, but in the form of Naqada jars. Acorn-shaped jar with slightly everted rim, twin thick lugged handles. Size: 3.375" W x 4.5" H (8.6 cm x 11.4 cm)
First document inside the vessel is an old catalog or sales sheet indicating this is a "Small Painted Pot, design goes back to pre-dynastic times but this may have been made in the XIX dynasty." Other document is an excavation tag written in pencil indicating this was found at Billabysh and described as, "pre-dynastic style vase XIX Dynasty, B/208/5." Vessel inscribed in black ink on lower side "B 208/5." According to the publication, the tomb where this vessel was found contained items that were all from the 19th dynasty. Between this fact and the TL test we have to conclude this is indeed a 3000 year old vessel made in the style of acorn jars made during Naqada II.
This vessel has been tested using Thermoluminescence technology (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period described.
Published in "BALABISH. Thirty-Seventh Memoir of The Egyptian Exploration Society, 1920," hand-drawn image shown on page 118, identified as image 2, B 208/5. This publication details a US excavation that happened in 1915The reason this is described as 19th dynasty is because the other objects found in this excavation were all of the New Kingdom period. We have yet to TL this and it is possible it is Pre-Dynastic and found/used by an individual who lived 19+ dynasties later. TL available for additional fee.
