Ancient Near East, Babylonian, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A gorgeous hand-carved face of a female deity, perhaps Astarte (also known as Ashtoreth and Ishtar in parts of Mesopotamia) - a goddess associated with war, sexuality, and fertility. Her tranquil visage stares serenely past the confines of space in time with recessed eyes while plump cheeks, a petite nose, and thin lips comprise the rest of her countenance. Her delicate face is framed by an arching headdress adorned with several drilled perforations which likely held additional ornamentation. Her hair cascades down both sides of her face with a neatly-arranged plait draped over her left shoulder. Astarte is an ancient goddess who has gone by many names throughout antiquity; she is even mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. A spectacular example with a sophisticated presentation and expert attention to detail. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 1.875" W x 2.7" H (4.8 cm x 6.9 cm); 4.55" H (11.6 cm) on included custom stand.
