Barbara Cagiati (Draper) (Italian-American, 1913-2000). "Night Blooming Cereus, Wainscott" 1969. Oil on board. Signed in red pigment by the artist on the lower right. A striking painting of beautiful Night Blooming Cereus cacti painted by Barbara Cagiati Draper as a Christmas present for her husband William Draper at their summer home in Wainscott, Long Island. On the verso is an inscription that reads, "For Bill Draper Xmas '69 with love / Night blooming Cereus / Wainscott '69". Barbara captured the beauty of the flowering plant's blooms of petal pink and lavender hues, as well as their verdant leaves which are delineated with loose brushwork in an expressive manner. Interestingly, the flowers of Night-Blooming Cereus are short lived - some only bloom once a year on a single night. This was an especially thoughtful gift for William Draper, as he adored flowering plants - so much so that he was a founder of the American Orchid Society. Size: 34.375" L x 17.875" W (87.3 cm x 45.4 cm)
Barbara Cagiati was married to Bill Draper for many years. They raised their family in New York City, and Barbara lived in Wainscott, New York until 1986 when she moved to Santa Fe. Her obituary in "The Santa Fe New Mexican" states, "Immensely creative, she had a way of manifesting great beauty and simplicity in her houses and gardens, as well as her painting."
Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.
