Greece, Athens, ca. 450-440 BCE. A finely painted Attic red-figure bell krater, a vessel used for mixing wine and water during symposia. Named for its inverted bell shape, the krater features broad handles and a flared rim, making it both functional and visually striking in Athenian banqueting culture. The obverse depicts a lively komos procession, a post-symposium revelry, led by a draped female playing a flute, followed by two nude youths, one holding a barbiton (a lyre-like stringed instrument). The reverse presents three draped youths, possibly engaged in conversation or preparing for the festivities. This dynamic composition reflects the importance of music, celebration, and social gatherings in Classical Athens. Size: 10.75" H (27.3 cm)
The Christie Painter was an Attic red-figure vase painter active in Athens during the mid-5th century B.C.E., approximately 450–425 B.C.E. The Christie Painter is known for his elegant yet restrained compositions, often featuring komos (revelry) scenes, Dionysian subjects, and symposiasts, as well as mythological depictions. His figures are typically graceful, well-proportioned, and expressive, capturing movement and emotion with a refined linear quality.
