Ancient Greece, Athens / Attic, ca. 550 to 540 BCE. A beautiful pottery skyphos carefully hand-painted in black-figure technique depicting the komos, a ritualistic drunken procession related to the wine god Dionysus - Roman Bacchus - and performed by revelers known as komasts. Some draped in ivy leaf necklaces, the 12 nude dancers present lively poses with arms and legs flung about in ecstatic expressions, the musculature of their slender bodies finely delineated with incised detailing. The cup itself displays an elegant silhouette of a bowl-shaped body with a gently flared rim flanked by a pair of upward-swooping handles, and all supported by a narrow, discoid foot. The interior walls are black with a red tondo of a target motif at the center. Traditionally used for the consumption of wine, the skyphos combines its form with its imagery to highlight the transforming power of the drink and the euphoria it produces making it the perfect conversation piece for your next symposium! Size: 4.1" L x 5.8" W x 2.6" H (10.4 cm x 14.7 cm x 6.6 cm)
During the 6th century, Attic cup painters favored Corinthian motifs, like the komos seen here. Komast cups like this example are the earliest canonical type of Attic black-figure kylikes.
