Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th century BCE. A lovely black-figure lekythos depicting four figures - two females, perhaps maenads or muses, at either end of the figural composition, both sitting beneath a grapevine, with two additional figures, one a seated lyre player, between them. The painter further imbued the figures with added/fugitive white pigment as well as incised details. In addition, the decorative program features a stylized meander above the figural program and staccato frets adorning the shoulder. The vessel presents a classic form comprised of a tapered cylindrical body with a planar shoulder, a tubular neck, a thick cup-shaped spout with a flat rim, and an applied strap handle joining neck to shoulder, all upon a discoid base. A wonderful piece, replete with pleasing imagery and an elegant form. Size: 1.75" in diameter x 5.125" H (4.4 cm x 13 cm)
Lekythoi stored coveted oils used for a wide variety of purposes in the Classical World. While larger examples were usually designated for keeping olive oil, smaller more delicate examples like this one were reserved for the bath to store precious unguents of sweet and floral aromas. This beautiful vessel was most likely created for the toilette of an elegant lady who perhaps enjoyed music given the depiction of a lyre player!

Condition
A few chips to periphery of base. Slight softening to black-figure decorative program, but most is relatively vivid with nice fugitive white pigment. In addition, much of the black glaze has developed a beautiful silvery iridescence.
