Ancient Near East, Neo-Assyrian or possibly Achaemenid period, ca. 800 to 500 BCE. A fabulous carved-steatite bowl with a heavy flat base and thick walls that rise to a circular rim, all enveloped in natural hues of blue-grey, cream, and tan. The exterior of this ancient vessel has been skillfully carved with the relief of a procession of six bearded male figures with bird wings known as winged genii (singular: genie). All shown in profile, each of the genii wears a knee-length, pleated skirt and a headband or diadem, as they all march to the right, holding cymbals in both hands. The procession is divided into groups of three, separated on both sides by large quatrefoils in circles, which are the symbol of the Utu or Shamash, the ancient Mesopotamian god of the sun, justice, mortality, and truth. A lovely border of repeated triangles each filled with a lattice motif, possibly representing mountains or palaces, decorates the rim of the vessel. Size: 4.875" in diameter x 2.875" H (12.4 cm x 7.3 cm)

Chip to side and a few chips to rim. Repair to miniscule area of rim with restoration over break lines. Expected light nicks, scratches, and abrasions, as well as some softening of detail, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with lovely earthen deposits.
