Armando Marino (Cuban, b. 1968). "The Raft (La Patera)" color lithograph, 2002. Signature and "PP" (printer's proof) in pencil at lower right. Armando Marino's "The Raft" is a fantastical piece featuring the body of a vintage 1950s red and white wheel-less car atop human legs against a background that appears to be a spraypainted wall. While elements of the composition are admittedly humorous, the surreal theme is also a sharp commentary on the economic hardships and shortages that have impacted Cuba for decades, as well as a powerful response to the Cuban diaspora when countless Cuban emigres left their homeland in desperation, oftentimes partaking in dangerous journeys on homemade rafts. It may also be interpreted as a symbol of hope, presenting the Cuban people marching toward opportunities for a better way of life. Size: 29.4" L x 37.5" W (74.7 cm x 95.2 cm)
Interestingly, Marino created two sculptural versions of this image. The first version of the car was featured in the 2003 Havana Biennial. Sadly, it had to be destroyed, because Marino could not take the sculpture out of Cuba. The Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania commissioned the second version in 2010, and it was subsequently acquired by the 21C Museum in Kentucky in January 2011.
