Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland & Archaic, ca. 5000 BCE to 1000 CE. A collection of 18 hand knapped stone celts and artefacts from archaic and woodland period cultures. The 16 celt heads are shaped as petite axe or scraping blades and could be hafted onto a handle or used as hand tools. The last 2 stones served a different purpose. The red stone is a bannerstone preform; when complete, it perhaps helped with hunting. At one end is the start of a hole using a cane drill and exhibits the characteristic "nipple" shape of this drilling technique. The other stone is triangular with a flat edge and narrow groove across the other two edges that meet at a point. This slate "boat stone" was possibly also used as an atlatl weight. Size of longest: 4" L x 1.5" W (10.2 cm x 3.8 cm)
