Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Sassanian (Sasanian / Sasanid), middle Sassanian Empire, ca. 400 to 500 CE. A beautiful garnet intaglio of fiery red-orange hues depicting a stylized wolf figure in a running position. The right-facing beast has four slender legs beneath a powerful body, a long bushy tail, and a fearsome head with a conical snout. The garnet is set within the ovoid bezel of a late 19th to early 20th century silver ring setting with bifurcated upper terminals, enabling it to be worn for any occasion! The Sasanian Empire (also called Sassanid, Sasanid, or Sassanian) is generally regarded as the highlight of ancient Iranian civilization and was the final pre-Islamic empire of Persia. It was established by Ardeshir I, the son of Papak and descendant of Sasan, in 224 CE. This empire came to an end in 651 CE. The Sasanians thought of themselves as the rightful successors to the Achaemenid Persians.

Condition
Wearable as shown. Intaglio is ancient and ring setting is antique. Surface wear commensurate with age, light tarnishing to silver components, minor fading to incised wolf design, and light roughness in some areas, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas.
