Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A finely painted icon depicting Christ enthroned at the center, making a gesture of benediction with his right hand and holding an open gospel in his left hand. In the arms of the Cross adorning his halo are the Greek letters that abbreviate his name. Mary, Joseph, and a variety of saints, apostles, and prophets surround him - with several of their haloes labeled to identify them. All is delineated in rich jewel tones and golden hues. A breathtaking example of this religious art form. Size: 12.5" L x 9.875" W (31.8 cm x 25.1 cm)
Christ assumes the Pantokrator pose. The term "Pantokrator" translates to "Ruler of All", "All Powerful", or "Lord of Hosts", and was a popular icon in the Orthodox Church, often occupying the dome of a church over the altar. The earliest prototype of this icon is from Palermo, Italy, and pre-dates the 15th century CE. It is rarer to find an example like this one, with the additional figures.
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly 'windows into heaven.'

Condition
Expected age wear with scuffs, abrasions, stains, and some losses as shown. There are areas of inpainting, but overall, the imagery is very nice.
