**First Time At Auction**
South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely sterling silver pendant featuring a sacred talisman known as Sri Pada, the divine footprint. The pendant is hammered into the shape of a temple, with repousse and stylized feet under a protective parasol within an arch. Rope borders and floral medallions decorate the peripheries. Suspended from the lower end of the pendant are three clusters of dangling balls that create a gentle jingle. The pendant is strung on a modern cord with a silver-plated lobster clasp. The Sri Pada is a natural rock formation located on Adam's Peak, a mountain in Sri Lanka, a sacred site to followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. The indented rock is believed to be the footprint of either Shiva or Buddha. Christians and Muslims would later attribute this footprint to Saint Thomas or Adam. No matter the beliefs of the wearer, this is certainly a special piece of wearable and sacred art! Size of pendant: 3.25" L x 3" W (8.3 cm x 7.6 cm); cord length: 21" L (53.3 cm); quality of silver: 95% to 97%; weight: 32 grams
