Ancient Near East, Kurdistan region, Ziwiye, ca. 8th to 7th century BCE. A rare and remarkable Egyptian faience jar presenting a flat circular base and thin walls that gently slant inward to an annular rim flanked by 2 petite handles. The exterior is skillfully adorned with a vibrant seafoam green glaze forming a triangular motif filled with a stippled design. The rim and base are each additionally embellished by a horizontal ring with equally-spaced vertical striations. Size: 3.75" in diameter x 2.875" H (9.5 cm x 7.3 cm)
The style of this vessel is congruent with objects found in the Ziwiye hoard in 1947. This treasure hoard contained gold, silver, ivory, and ceramic products from 4 cultures: Assyrian, Scythian, proto-Achaemenid, and provincial native pieces. This remarkable find provided a link between cultures of the Iranian plateau and the nomadic of Scythian art forms known as the "animal style." Examples from the Ziwiye hoard are now scattered among private and public collections.
