Native American, North America, Southwest United States, Arizona, Hohokam culture, ca. 900 to 1100 CE. A rare and remarkable Hohokam jar of the Sacatan Red on Buff phase. Adorned in hues of burnt sienna and beige, the ancient vessel presents a round yet stable base and impressively thin walls that curve outwards to a carinated hip, a bulbous body, and an inwardly curved rim over a deep basin. The exterior boasts a handsome decorative program of 6 lozenge-shaped panels, each framing a large, spotted lizard, all displaying rhomboid heads and bodies, attenuated bent legs, and annular eyes. The Hohokam peoples used paddle and anvil technique to create their ceramics. The paddle-and-anvil technique employed a paddle and a stone or another ceramic surface to help shape the clay. The stone or ceramic piece would be placed on the interior of the clay while the paddle would be used to strike the clay surface on its corresponding exterior surface. Size: 7.3" in diameter x 6.4" H (18.5 cm x 16.3 cm)
Hohokam pottery was similar to the pottery produced in the plains only the clays tended to be of finer quality and were tempered with caliche and finely ground micaceous schist and vegetative material.
